Hello, and welcome to SongwriterCircle, a new group for songwriters! Feel free to submit your lyrics, sheet music, videos, or recorded songs (a preview image with a link, or any other way you could think of). Also, if you know any songwriters or music lovers interested in learning how to write songs on dA, encourage them to join! If enough people join, I will start posting prompts on a regular basis. But I do need people to join to do that.

This is also my first group, so if you have any suggestions, please note me!

Just a few rules:

:bulletgreen: You must be a member of this group to submit to the group's gallery.

:bulletgreen: Please submit to the appropriate folder.

:bulletgreen: When commenting on someone's work, please be respectful. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all and all that. Which is not to say that you cannot give constructive criticism, as long as you can see the line between the former and an insult.

:bulletgreen: If your deviation contains mature content, PLEASE select the appropriate filter when you submit it, or it will deleted from the gallery.

:bulletgreen: Feel free to ask any questions and give suggestions by posting a comment or by noting the group.
Hello to all 6 members and 7 watchers!

I know I haven't posted a journal in too long, but in case you hadn't seen it, I wanted to introduce THE GUIDE! I made a Guide to Songwriting for those who are interested in songwriting but aren't really sure where to start. Pretty much, I described my writing process, although it might not be the way everyone else does it. I also included some of my personal tips. I hope it helps!

In other news, I'm still trying to find more people to join and groups who want to affiliate. So if you know any [aspiring] songwriters, please encourage them to join! And as always, note me if there are any questions/suggestions.

Hey, are instrumental submissions allowed or must they have lyrics?

Thanks in advance! :D

Is there anyway to teach someone to move from just plain lyrics to actual music?
I played piano for seven years and currently play bass guitar, but I still have that music background, yet I struggle to come up with melodies to accompany any lyrics I write (maybe the lyrics are just crap, but even a crap song is better than no song).

So is there any way one can be taught how to find melodies to go with lyrics?

I'm not sure there's a way to teach someone how to write melodies. It comes naturally to some people, and it definitely helps to have a background in music.

For me, it's harder to come up with a melody to go with my lyrics, than lyrics to go with my melody. It's even better to write both simultaneously.

How are you trying to come up with melodies? I think it helps to start with a few chords on the piano, or a riff on the bass, play it over and over again, and start humming a tune that goes with it. Then, you can try to incorporate the lyrics. Some words may be added or changed, to go with the rhythm.

This is what I do in my songwriting process. I hope it helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. :)

Can you lend me some talent? :P

What if my melodies sound similar to ones from other artist's? I'm not talking about taking theirs and adding my own words, but those subtle influences?
GuinevereToGwen Featured By Owner Jan 21, 2013  Student Writer
Haha, thanks.

It's definitely very difficult to come up with a completely original melody. I mean, there are hundreds of thousands of songs out there! So subtle influences, in my opinion, are fine. Same with being inspired by the melody of a different song. I've absolutely done that before. :)
